The historic village of Grand Marais, Michigan is located on the south shore of Lake Superior at the eastern gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Our warm summers, beautiful autumns, and snowy winters make Grand Marais a year-round recreation destination.
Ryan Anderson of Ray, Minnesota won his third consecutive UP200 on Sunday, February, 19th, finishing in Grand Marais at 9:16am. RIght behind him at 9:44 was David Gill of Skandia, Michigan. Mushers were delighted with the trail, which was hard and fast, and several of them commented that the finish in Grand Marais meant they enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the Kingston Plains on the way to the finish. Grand Marais stepped up at the last minute and hosted a great finish for the race with only a few days' notice. A huge THANK YOU to all who volunteered! Grand Marais is truly The Little Town That Could. Be sure to visit the Gallery section of the website for lots of great photos from race weekend, including litte Nate Stielstra, who rode to the finish on his daddy's sled. Nate, who is almost two, became our Checkpoint Mascot over the weekend!.
A fundraising drive is underway to build a beautiful playground on the beach at Bayshore Park. If enough money can be raised, the project could start this spring and the kids could have a fun, safe place to play this summer! We've set up a special section of the website: Bayshore Playground Project. Please visit the project pages and find out all about it.
The long-awaited construction permits from the US Army Corps of Engineers and DEQ have been signed by all parties. The License and Lease have been executed. Next is to put the project out for bid! We can't wait to post pictures of the first loads of rock being hauled in and the work to begin which is tentatively slated for April 2012.
The new rotating header photos are coutesy of photographer Paul Petersen. Paul spent a good part of the summer as the Pictured Rocks Artist-in-Residence and took many great photos of the park and the Grand Marais area. See more of his work at www.petersen-photography.com.
Our beloved Pickle Barrel House Museum is getting a major renovation this year to fix water damage. This will be a two-stage project, and the second half will be completed in the Spring of 2012. We've put up a whole gallery of photos so you can follow the progress, and we'll be adding to the galley as the work comes along. Click the Gallery tab at the top of the page to go to the Pickle Barrel Restoration section, and enjoy the photos!
