The historic village of Grand Marais, Michigan is located on the south shore of Lake Superior at the eastern gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Our warm summers, beautiful autumns, and snowy winters make Grand Marais a year-round recreation destination.
A fundraising drive is underway to build a beautiful playground on the beach at Bayshore Park. If enough money can be raised, the project could start this spring and the kids could have a fun, safe place to play this summer! We've set up a special section of the website: Bayshore Playground Project. Please visit the project pages and find out all about it.
Grand Marais received an early Christmas present: the long-awaited construction permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers has arrived, which means that the harbor breakwall project can be put out for bid! We expect construction to begin in the spring, hopefully in April. The permit clears the way for the breakwall. At last, Grand Marais Harbor will be preserved and protected for future generations. We'll keep you posted as things develop! If you aren't following us on Facebook, click the link at the top of the page and sign up so we can send you frequent updates.
The new rotating header photos are coutesy of photographer Paul Petersen. Paul spent a good part of the summer as the Pictured Rocks Artist-in-Residence and took many great photos of the park and the Grand Marais area. See more of his work at www.petersen-photography.com.
Our beloved Pickle Barrel House Museum is getting a major renovation this year to fix water damage. This will be a two-stage project, and the second half will be completed in the Spring of 2012. We've put up a whole gallery of photos so you can follow the progress, and we'll be adding to the galley as the work comes along. Click the Gallery tab at the top of the page to go to the Pickle Barrel Restoration section, and enjoy the photos!
According to TV6 News a lot of motorists are experiencing flat tires while traveling H-58 between Melstrand and Grand Marais in Alger County (see full article here). It appears that the flats are caused by large amounts of nails being thrown onto the roadway. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles have all been affected. The Alger County Road Commission has cleaned the roadway and is keeping an eye on it. The matter is being investigated by the Michigan State Police. If you have any information about the source of the nails, call the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post at (906) 475-9922, the Alger County Sheriff's Department at (906) 387-4444, or Munising Detachment at (906) 387-4551.
The Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce is pledging a reward of $1000.00 toward the arrest and conviction of the person(s) putting nails out on H58. This brings the total reward to $2000 so far. The businesses in Grand Marais welcome all visitors and motorcyclists to our beautiful area and it is sad that a few are making it difficult and dangerous for our fall tourists. We will post updates as we receive them. UPDATE from U.P. Cruising: As of 9 a.m., October 12, 2011, with the help of the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce, Burt Township (Grand Marais), the Munising Visitors Bureau (Motel/Hotel owners), and now followed by the Alger County Chamber of Commerce, (Munising) the reward is at $6,000.00 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person doing the vandalism on H-58.
