ATVs: County Roads Open to ORVs plus Three Designated Trails Close to Grand Marais
Sixth Amendment to Alger County Ordinance #14 – Off Road Recreational Vehicle Ordinance, adopted June 13, 2005 In Part:
“The Alger County Board of Commissioners amended SECTION 2 of Ordinance #14 concerning off road recreational vehicles to read as follows:
Section 2: An ORV may be operated on the shoulder or on the right-of-way, but not on the roadway of all county roads within Alger County, except when posted closed.
All other provisions of the Alger County Off-Road Recreational Vehicle Ordinance (Ordinance #14) shall remain in full force and effect.
This 6th Amendment to Alger County Ordinance #14 shall be effective immediately upon the publication of this notice of adoption as it affects the health, safety, and welfare of the resident of the County of Alger.”
There are many two tracks, logging roads, and abandoned trails within the county that are regularly used by ATV’s and some that link into the Luce and Schoolcraft County trail systems. County Road H-58 offers a great opportunity to explore the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Of course, you have to obey the NO ORV signs and stay on the county right-of-way or be subject to fines of up to $5000.
Three of the finest designated ORV trails in Michigan are close by. Twenty minutes south of Grand Maraisis the trailhead for the Danaher Plains ORV Trail (map). This trail is open to all ORVs that are 50″ or less in width. The trail winds through beautiful marsh and higher ground in the Fox River basin. Parking is available at the trailhead.
Twenty-five minutes east of Grand Marais (just south of Deer Park) is the trailhead for two top ORV trails. The Pine Ridge ORV Trail (map) is a 49-mile long trail system winding through forested upland. This trail is open to ORVs that are 50″ or less in width. There is ample parking at the trailhead.
The Pine Ridge ORV Trail connects with the Two Heart ORV Trail close to the trailhead. The Two Heart ORV Trail (map) continues east toward the Two Heart River. This 36-mile long trail system is for ORVs that are 50″ or less in width.
ATV/ORV use is not permitted on any other trails or roads in Lake Superior State Forest. These ORV trails were designed and built for your ORV use. Please stay on the trails and off the surrounding land.
