The harbor in Grand Marais is filling in with sand due to the deterioration of the harbor breakwall. The US Army Corps of Engineers stopped maintaining the breakwall after World War II and this allowed sand to infiltrate the harbor. Grand Marais Harbor is the only Harbor of Refuge along a very dangerous 90-mile stretch of Lake Superior. Lives have been lost because the harbor is not functioning as it should.
If the breakwall is not rebuilt, the harbor will be non-functional next year, by current estimates. We are racing against the clock to try and save this priceless jewel of Lake Superior. Visit the Save Your Harbor website to see how you can help. You will also find a history of the breakwall, old photos and charts of the harbor, and updates on the progress to date.
