Grand
Marais, located on the scenic shores of Lake Superior and bordering Pictured
Rocks National Park, is full of fun-filled enjoyment and interesting people.
In the summer, the annual Music and Arts Festival, the Fourth of July
Festivities and the Kayak Symposium along with its amazing lakeside weather
make for a popular destination spot for people of all ages and interests.
More traditional activities include excellent fishing and hunting, "rockhounding"
for agates and winter sports! When the snow begins to fall, the town is
magically transformed. Winter activities include snowmobiling, snow-shoeing,
ice-skating, cross country skiing, and sledding for children. Grand Marais
is the true "year-round playground"!
Burt Township School, which is shown at the top left of this page, was built in 1929. The school has a work staff of 9 teachers and has a total of about 60 students K-12. Unique Programs:
The Grand Marais School Forest is one of the biggest school forests in the United States, with about 1600 acres. Burt Township School is currently looking to build upon our school forest program by encouraging outdoor activities for all of our students. Our school forest director is working with community members and students to improve the hiking and ski trails, with better markers and signs and trail maintenance. We are also beginning the process of securing funds for an "outdoor classroom" which will be built on the site of the old "chimney". Our school also
collaborates with the National Park Service learning about the natural
environment and history of our area. Out-of-town experiential learning
trips are another excitement shared by our students and staff. This
spring we will be working on creating our first school-community garden!
Our Elementary school and High School Horticulure class along with the
Grand Harais Garden Club will spearhead the project! Hands-on learning
activities in the classroom and out for our students are endless! Contact Information:
